10 Facts About Meydan Racecourse

1️⃣ The largest integrated horse racing facility in the world is Meydan Racecourse. 620 hectares, 1.6 km long grandstand, with enough for more than 60,000 spectators.

2️⃣ Formerly known as the Nad Al Sheba Racecourse, it was situated on the same site and was operational from 1986 to 2009. It reopened on March 27, 2010.

3️⃣ The Meydan developer spent almost 10 billion AED, or roughly $2.72 billion, building the racetrack.

4️⃣ A crescent-shaped cantilevered roof with curved titanium and solar panels maximizes energy efficiency atop the grandstand.

5️⃣ Has a 2,400-meter surface track and an 8.75-furlong (1,750-meter) left-hand dirt track.

6️⃣ The complex houses a hotel, gallery, racing museum, and a nine-hole Peter Harradine-designed golf course. 95% of the rooms at the Meydan Hotel, the first five-star trackside hotel in the world, have views of the racetracks.

7️⃣ The racecourse serves its intended purpose of staging equestrian contests, such as the Dubai World Cup, Dubai International Racing Carnival, and Winter Racing Challenge, from November to March.

8️⃣ The Dubai World Cup is the world's most extravagant and opulent horse racing event. $30.5 million in total prize money will be awarded over nine races, with $12 million going to the winner.

9️⃣ It functions as a performance hall, a business and convention center, and more during the rest of the year. The racecourse has hosted performances by Kylie Minogue, Lady Gaga, and Elton John, among others. It served as the set for "Star Trek Beyond" filming.
